In Fight Club was Tyler Durden a real person on the plane?

I think Tyler was always a split personality. At the beginning of the movie you see Tyler come in and then out of focus. It happens a couple times as if he starts off small but starts to become more real to Jack as the movie progresses... Do I make sense? haha.
