What is the best way to fly to Japan? Through what airline?

Delta/Northwest is usually cheaper but it also depends on where you are flying from. United also flies to Osaka as well as Japan Airlines and ANA but the Japanese carriers are usually more expensive. You can see how much tickets are on Korean Airlines or China Airlines but you will need to make a connection in either Seoul or Taipei. If there is a connection, just look at the TV monitors at the airport to find out what gate your next flight departs from. If you fly on Korean or China Airlines, the in-flight magazine should have an airport diagram.
