How do you housebreak a dog?

I had the same question so i went to the vet, she said that when you dog starts sniffing to bring her out side and put her on the gr. After she goes say " Good girl outside" to get her to know outside from inside. She also said the worse thing to do is to use potty mats because your teaching her to go inside than teaching to go outside. It worked with my dog i hope it works with yours.
